| UNEMBOSSED TARGET BALL with lattice and window design. 3. 3.3 ounces. Just a beautiful ball here, loads of pleasing blue coloration. Who wouldn't like this striking target ball on their shelf? Common but never boring. There is a chip made on the mouth when the top was ground. A pretty ball in Mint 9 condition. $70-150. MB $70. | $ 325 |
| WW GREENER St MARY'S WORKSBIRMm & 68 HAYMARKET LONDON. 3". 3.1 ounces. Well you have to have a Greener's included and this one has the original feathers. It's a medium blue coloration and as you can see, not only has the feathers but some dirt on the exterior. It appears this one might have been tossed in the air and landed on the ground without being hit. Could it survive a crash landing? Well, yes and no. There "appears" to be a couple flashes in the glass when it's turned in the light. Then suddenly they appear to look like white feathers. The only sure way is to take the feathers out and we'd rather not. There is also a little ding near the mouth so we'll stick with a couple flashes. In-making or not, it's still an interesting ball, we are selling it as damaged. You grade this one but please check the video. Est. $200-400. MB $200
| $ 350 |
| VAN CUTSEM A ST QUENTIN. Burst lip. Lattice design. 3". 3.0 ounces. Here is another common but beautiful target ball. This one is about as good as they get and would grade an easy Mint 9. A little heavier than the other example in this sale. Estimate $50-100. MB $50. | $ 210 |
| A PAINES FILE BALL PAT. Sheared lip. 3". 2.4 oz. Here's another oddly struck Paine ball, similar to the other example in this auction. Extremely crude, it's brilliant golden amber and is also a 3-piece mold. An oddly blown ball, there are letters either missing or very poorly struck. This has most of the embossing after the PAT missing, similar to the other lot. You'd have to believe there was a defective mold or for some reason they just didn't want that patent date on the ball and in the process lost a few other letters. Check video for an exact description. Another unusual and brilliantly colored Paine ball. One of the crudest balls in this sale. Mint 9. Est. $300-400. MB $200. | $ 210 |
| SEVEN HORIZONTAL RINGS. Rough lip. 3". 1.7 ounces. This is a terrific example of this popular unembossed target ball. About as good as you're going to get, this one is lighter through the middle and a deeper brilliant blue on the top and bottom. There is a minor amount of stain on the interior, very minor and mentioned only for accuracy. A super example if you do not have one yet. Mint 9. Estimate $300-500. MB $300. | $ 400 |
| STACEY SETTLESS LONDON, E. embossed on base. 3 1/4" high. 2.7 ounces. Here's a different ball, quite crude and from across the pond. We've seen another example of the Stacey ball with the embossing on the side. This example has it written circularly on the base. It also has the quilted pattern or squares. The height is a little deceptive as it has a rather long neck. It's a fairly heavy ball for its diameter. Not your usual aqua, it's a little deeper. There are a couple pretty good chinks out of the top and a flash measuring almost a half-inch in the base, almost certainly an annealing check. Other than that, it's very crude with loads of bubbles and other areas of crudity. Grade? It's a little rough but we'd have to say, without the flaws, it would grade around Near Mint 7. It's pretty well accepted you don't find these in great condition often, if ever. One of the crudest balls in the auction. Est. $500-1000. MB $400. | $ 1,500 |
| BOGARDUS' GLASS BALL PATd APR 10 1877-. 2 7/8". 2.3 ounces. Here's another Bogardus in a striking bright medium green coloration. It has a solid strike and would certainly be considered a top specimen. We sold a similar colored Bogardus in an earlier auction, it also being perfect and a brilliant green. No amber in this one, it might appear that there is a touch but this is a real tough color to photograph without showing a little amber for some reason. Estimate $1500-2000 MB $800. | $ 3,800 |
| BOGARDUS GLASS BALL PATd APR. 10 1877. Sheared lip. 3". 2.4 ounces. A very pretty ball in an oddball color. Its basically a light purple with steaks of light blue running throughout the ball. Crude and beautiful, we havent seen many in this delicious color. Hopefully the streaming video will bring out the true color. Its very hard to photograph. Just another neat looking Bogardus ball, how many different colors of these intriguing balls are out there?! Mint 9, a great example. Est. $700-1500. MB $500. | $ 3,800 |
| BOGARDUS GLASS BALL PATd APR. 10 1877. Sheared lip. 3". 2.3 oz. Here's another interesting Bogardus ball, this one a light blue. Another extremely crude ball, this one has loads of overall bubbles and just downright unevenness to the glass. The strike might seem a little light, and it probably is, but some of that goes to the crudity of the glass. A beautiful light and delicate blue, there is a radiating potstone in the shoulder area. See video. Without the stone, we'd grade this one About Mint 8. Est. $500-800. MB $500. | $ 3,200 |
| VAN CUTSEM A ST QUENTIN. Burst lip. Lattice design. 3". 2.4 ounces. Here is a common but beautiful target ball. This one is Near Mint 7 with a little residue on it. Still a nice ball, a little cleaning might help it a bit. Estimate $50-100. MB $50. | $ 190 |
| WW GREENER St MARY'S WORKSBIRMm & 68 HAYMARKET LONDON. 3". 1.9 ounces. Of all the balls in the auction, we've definitely taken a shine to this one. A light plum color, the ball is a little uneven but a beauty to behold. Condition is like it was made yesterday and the strike is as solid as a rock. A fun ball to photograph. Attic Mint 10. Est. $300-1000. MB $300. | $ 650 |
| GURD & SON 185 DUNDAS STREET LONDON ONT. Crudely sheared lip. 3". 1.3 ounces. Here we have a handsome tobacco colored Gurd ball. The last example we sold of this had the lattice design on the exterior, as you can see this is the less fancy, more common example. For condition, it would be a tough one to improve on and we can easily call this example a Mint 9. Another exceptional offering from the Alex Kerr Collection. Estimate $700-1500. MB $600. | $ 1,200 |
| PITCH BALL with bottom embossed SEPT 9 1879 MARCH 9 1880 CTB/PATENTED/CO. 3", 2.3 ounces. Here's a rather crude ball if not somewhat unusual. It is made of pitch or graphite, take your pick. This example, albeit crude, has all of the base embossing very readable, unusual for this item as others we've seen were pretty poorly struck. It's hard to call something this dented and uneven Mint but we are. Grades a 9. Est. $300-500. MB $200. | $ 325 |
| SOPHIENHUTTE IN ILMENAU (THUR). 3". 2.3 ounces. Here's an interesting ball and the first one we've seen. A beautiful almost orange amber, it has a less than perfect base amongst the strongly embossed lettering and lattice design. Dave Shadel has enlightened us as to the writing on the ball. He explains "It's the House of Sophia in Ilmenau (this is the town name) THUR is short for Thuringea(the state in Germany where the town is located." Thanks Dave, any idiot should've known that.
It is pretty well known that Alex bought this exact ball from Horst Blusmeir years ago. Please check out http://www.glswrk-auction.com/215.htm for more information on this ball. What a pretty ball. Mint 9 with dent. A little smaller than some of the other balls we've got here, this one shines in the light like a diamond in the wind. Achtung! Est. $1000-2000. MB $700. | $ 1,400 |
| A PAINES FILE BALL PAT. Sheared lip. 3". 2.6 oz. Alex Kerr made it a point to make sure whoever was looking at this ball noticed the differences in it, and other Paine balls. We've gone ahead and left his original sticker on there, pointing out the missing letters. If you look closely, there are what appear to be the attempt at lettering, sometimes barely any, some letters you can almost make out. He felt it was a different mold but one might think that it was simply a very poorly blown mold. Whatever the difference, it's an unusual and brilliantly colored Paine ball. It has a very crude neck with other areas of crudity and is a 3-piece mold. Mint 9. Est. $200-400. MB $200. | $ 275 |
